Saudi Arabia is already set to build nine desalination plants on the Red Sea
To address a water shortage in Iraq, a Chinese company has been awarded a contract to build a seawater desalination plant.
Under an agreement with the Baghdad government, Shanghai Electric Company will construct the desalination and hydroelectric facility complex in Southern Basra.
Iraqi News Agency reported that Basra's deputy governor, Mohammed Al-Tamimi, discussed the project with officials from Shanghai Electric in Baghdad on Thursday.
A Chinese firm has been awarded another contract to build a $1 billion power plant in the central Diyala governorate, according to the statement.
