#IraqProgress Iraq Jordan Power Connection is Ready
An electricity grid interconnection between Iraq and Jordan was completed on Saturday. September 30th 2023
According to INA, Electricity Minister Ziad Ali Fadel said production would begin within days.
In the project's first phase, Iraq will receive 150 megawatts of power.
Iraq is also proceeding with its project for interconnection with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members, the electricity minister said.
In 2023, Iraq aimed to provide 24,000 megawatts of electricity for consumption, Fadel said.
"We are preparing a plan for electricity consumption for summer 2024," he said.
Iraq and Jordan laid the foundation stone for an electrical interconnection project in October 2022.
About 19,000-21,000 megawatts are generated in Iraq, but the country's energy needs exceed 30,000 megawatts.
Iraq has been importing 1,200 megawatts of electricity from neighboring Iran for years.
Iraq signed a memorandum of understanding with Saudi Arabia last year for electricity interconnection.
