Iraq to play a key role in global gas supplies through natural and associated gas investments.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani confirmed that the government plans to export gas.
In a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Al-Sudani made his remarks at the Middle East Global Summit organized by Al-Monitor and Semafor in New York.
A review of the Iraqi government's approach to important issues, including the optimal use of energy sources and fighting corruption, was conducted by the Iraqi Prime Minister.
In his remarks, Al-Sudani said it is time for US businesses to invest in Iraq, especially in the energy market. He noted that Iraq will soon play a key role in global gas supplies through natural and associated gas investments.
In Iraq, 1.3 billion cubic feet of gas are burned daily, and one billion cubic feet of gas is imported from Iran. Gas imports and flared gas cost the country between $8 billion and $9 billion annually.
"Natural gas and associated gas have not been invested in Iraq until recently," Al-Sudani said.
According to the Prime Minister, a number of projects have been completed by the Iraqi government in the gas sector, which will enable Baghdad to export gas in the future.
"We have reached agreements with TotalEnergies and UAE and Chinese companies in the gas sector," Al-Sudani explained.
According to Iraq's Prime Minister, as well as international companies' contributions through offers recently made by the Iraqi Oil Ministry, other projects in the gas sector are being implemented by national companies.
During the summit, Al-Sudani stated that the government plans to make Iraq a gas-exporting country, taking into account the country's large natural gas reserves.
The Iraqi Prime Minister also discussed the Development Road project, which will include pipelines to transport oil and gas to Turkey and Europe.
