EXCELLENT NEWS: Greece Starting Direct Flights to Baghdad in December 2025 - A Vote of Confidence

Baghdad — In a striking sign of fresh horizons, Iraq is poised to be reintegrated into Europe’s travel map: on December 16 the Greek carrier Aegean Airlines will launch direct flights from Athens to Baghdad, marking the first such route by a European-Union airline in years. (AP News)

What does this milestone mean? Far more than a mere flight path—it is a signal: Iraq is being welcomed back. After the darkest years of shock and upheaval, notably the rise of the Islamic State and the long struggle that followed, this step illustrates that Iraq is standing on firmer ground and ready to open up.

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, speaking during his visit to Baghdad, emphasized that the new air link will “substantially boost our people-to-people, economic, but also cultural, ties.” (AP News) For Iraq, which has spent years rebuilding its institutions, restoring security, and seeking international recognition, this is a visible endorsement.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein welcomed the move, linking it to Iraq’s regained stability and its growing stature on the world stage. He noted that a series of recent European visits reflects the confidence that foreign partners are starting to place in Iraq’s future. (AP News)

In practical terms, the Athens-Baghdad route opens the door to increased tourism, business travel, and investment. As Greece and Iraq explore cooperation in agriculture, tourism, and investment, the new air bridge is a tangible anchor for that ambition. Meanwhile, Baghdad’s international airport is undergoing a major upgrade following a contract worth around $764 million awarded to a global consortium, signalling that Iraq isn’t just hoping for growth—it’s preparing for it.

For a country that a decade ago was still scarred by violence, displacement, and the fear of extremism, this “back on the map” moment matters. It tells citizens and the world that Iraq is not just a site of struggle—but a destination of opportunity.

In essence, the direct flight is more than transportation—it is a vote of confidence. It says: “We recognise Iraq’s recovery; we believe in Iraq’s tomorrow.” And for Iraqis, it marks a turning point where the capital’s runway becomes a runway to the future.
