So, what has stopped the foreign investments, besides corruption?

This second news story shows us that the U.S. is not only showing interest in Iraq's day-to-day occurrences, but is on the ground within Iraq.

The United States has warned Iraq that it could face severe punishment. The U.S. says Iraq is helping Iran secretly sell oil, which is against international rules. 

If Iraq doesn't stop, the U.S. might block $350 million in oil money and go after Iraq's main oil company, SOMO.

The warning came on July 3. The U.S. said that oil from Iran is being moved through Iraqi networks. It also listed six companies and four oil ships involved in this illegal trade. 

Later, the U.S. punished 22 companies in Turkey, the UAE, and Hong Kong for helping Iran sell oil. That money helps Iran's special military group, the IRGC-Quds Force.

An Iraqi lawmaker said the Minister of Oil will be questioned. He warned that smuggling oil could hurt Iraq's economy, since 95% of Iraq's money comes from selling oil.

At the same time, the U.S. is also worried about Iranian-backed armed groups in Iraq. 

These groups are part of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). The U.S. says some of these groups cause violence and work with terrorist groups from Iran.

On Sunday, Iraq's Prime Minister met with a U.S. official in Baghdad. Let me repeat that.  The Iraqi Prime Minister met with U.S. officials in Iraq.  This is important because if U.S. officials are visiting Iraq, then we may be able to do the same, sooner than we thought.  The previous administration usually held meetings with Iraq outside of the country.
