The US expected to respond to the latest increase in attacks on US troops in Iraq

You keep getting these reports because instability has entered the picture.  The world is on the verge of instability.  The peaceful country of Sweden, which has been at peace for 200 years, is telling citizens to prepare for war.

Here is what's happening:

An intense barrage of missiles has been fired at the Al Asad airbase in western Iraq by Iran-backed groups in an attempt to kill US troops.

Iran-backed militias launched their largest attack against US forces to date.

"This is a huge escalation, involving perhaps 15-20 missiles," said Joel Wing, a California-based expert who has tracked violence in Iraq for 16 years.

"It seems as if things are spiraling out of control. They cannot fire ballistic missiles without expecting casualties."

The US is almost certainly going to respond in a lethal manner, if only to deter further attacks. One option for the US would be to strike a militia commander.

There are a number of militias backed by Tehran in Iraq, the majority of which fall under the Popular Mobilisation Forces umbrella. Since the beginning of the Israel-Gaza war and the rise in regional tensions between Iran, its proxy groups, and the US and Israel, they have intensified their attacks on US forces in the country.

Iran fired around 12 ballistic missiles at the joint Iraqi-US-operated Al Asad airbase in early 2020 - but this is the largest attack by Iran-backed militias within Iraq.

The militias launched smaller salvos of one or two ballistic missiles at US forces at the end of last year but have mostly used smaller, inaccurate rockets and small but deadly drones.

In Diyala province, vehicles carrying drones take part in a parade marking the seventh anniversary of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces paramilitary.

According to the International Coalition against ISIS, about 2,500 American military trainers are in Iraq as part of the militias' campaign to pressure the US to leave the country.

Despite criticizing militias for attacking coalition troops on Iraqi territory, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani has increased his calls for US troops to leave the country as the conflict escalates.

He also strongly condemned US counterattacks against the militias as a "violation of sovereignty".

Unlike ballistic missiles - used in Saturday's attack - which can carry several hundred kilograms of explosives, drones used by militias carry up to 50 kilograms of explosives.

According to Centcom, the US headquarters in the Middle East, some soldiers were being evaluated for traumatic brain injuries after Saturday's attack, and one Iraqi was seriously injured.
