An array of launchers disguised inside a modified tanker truck was used by Iranian-backed militants in Iraq earlier this week to fire 122mm artillery rockets at coalition forces in neighboring Syria.
According to U.S. Central Command, the top U.S. military command in the Middle East, 15 122mm rockets originating in Iraq were fired at the Rumalyn Landing Zone in Syria around 2:15 p.m. "No personnel or equipment were injured or damaged."
A U.S.-led coalition forward operating location near the Iraqi border in Syria's northeastern tip is called Rumalyn Landing Zone. An umbrella organization that includes multiple Iranian-backed militias, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Rumalyn Landing Zone is roughly in the area covered by the Russian and US flags on the northeastern tip of Syria.
As part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the Combined Joint Task Force [CJTF-OIR] located the point of origin with uncrewed ISR assets and passed the location along to the Iraqi Security Forces. This coalition is primarily focused on fighting ISIS in Iraq and Syria and is called CJTF-OIR.
Five of the 122mm rockets loaded into the improvised launcher vehicle, which was recovered by Iraqi forces, did not launch properly.
