BREAKING NEWS FOR US: 38 Arrest Warrants Issued in Nov Against Senior Iraqi Officials

Central Baghdad, Iraq

In November, the Iraqi Commission of Integrity (COI) issued 38 arrest warrants and summonses against senior Iraqi officials.

Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported that the orders the Iraqi judiciary gave were related to cases the COI was investigating in Baghdad and other governorates.

According to the statement, eight arrest warrants and 30 summonses were issued against 34 senior officials by the judiciary.

The officials included three former ministers, three former governors, 18 former directors, and 10 directors currently in office, as well as a former member of the governorate council. (The original article did not list the names, and no further information could be found online as of yet)

Last Saturday, a representative of the European Union (EU) confirmed that the Iraqi government has made significant progress in combating corruption.

The EU representative, during his meeting with the head of the COI, Haider Hanoun, commended the Iraqi government's approach to combating corruption, citing that European companies have been advised to operate in Iraq as regulations are encouraging, security is improving, and the judiciary is professional, according to a statement cited by INA.

In October 2022, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani vowed to crack down on corruption.

Last December, UNAMI's Special Representative Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert expressed confidence in Al-Sudani's ability to combat corruption and provide services.
