Iraq is Pulling for the Arab Defense Treaty in Response to the Israel and Hamas Conflict

The YouTube channel and the blog are making every effort to stay out of the war between Israel and Hamas except to report non-toxic news.  In this article, we learn what Iraq proposes as a response to Israel's response to Hamas.

According to PressTV, the Iraqi Parliament has urged for the Arab Defence Treaty to be enacted in response to Israel's ongoing attacks on the Gaza Strip. These attacks come after a terror attack by Hamas on 7 October that has led Israel to launch aerial bombings and prepare for a potential ground invasion. Despite widespread condemnation of Hamas for the attack, some Islamic nations are standing by the group and placing blame on Israel.

A renewed call was also made by Iraqi lawmakers for the Arab League to hold an emergency session and condemn Israeli aggression against Gaza. They also requested the creation of open corridors so that humanitarian, medical, and food aid could reach Gaza.

Iraqi legislators further asserted, according to media reports, that “activate the League’s Charter since any attack on a member is an attack on Arab countries,” activate the Joint Arab Defence Treaty.

The League of Arab States signed the Treaty of Joint Defence and Economic Co-operation in 1950, which echoed the principles of mutual security and cooperation among member states. It was a result of the collective aspirations of several Arab countries. As a result, it promoted collective defense against external aggression.

Activating this treaty would lead to a coordinated military response by member states, including the provision of troops, equipment, and logistical support.

The treaty saw some development in 1961 with the establishment of the Joint Arab Command (JAC).

The treaty has more symbolic significance than practical military utility. Under the terms of the Joint Defence and Economic Cooperation Treaty of 1950, the Joint Defence Council of the Arab League is one of the most important institutions within the Arab League.

The Arab League also does not maintain a standing military force like the European Union (EU).

Arab League leaders, however, decided to reactivate joint defense efforts and create a peacekeeping force during the 2007 summit. A joint military force was created in 2015 after member states reached an in-principle agreement to deploy this force to a variety of regions, including South Lebanon, Darfur, and Iraq, among others.

The Arab League was founded in Cairo in 1945 with six initial members. Now, it has 22 member states from North Africa, West Asia, and parts of East Africa.

A primary objective of the Arab League is to enhance relations among member states, coordinate collaboration, safeguard their independence and sovereignty, and address shared concerns.
