AASU called on United States, European Union United Nations to review Zimbabwe's protracted sanctions

AASU is the largest student movement in Africa and a very dominant force on the Continent and beyond. The All-Africa Students Union (AASU) organizes all students in Africa – from the basic level to Institutions of higher learning; in essence, the Union is the umbrella organization for all students of Africa

Students under the aegis of the All-Africa Students Union (AASU) have called on the United States, European Union, United Nations, and others to review Zimbabwe's protracted sanctions.

It should be noted the United States does not have sanctions against the country of Zimbabwe but has placed sanctions on certain banks and industry individuals.

AASU president Osisiogu Osikenyi Enyinnaya made the call during a press conference in Abuja on Friday, acknowledging the state of Zimbabwe's economy in recent years, with periods of hyperinflation that rendered the local currency worthless, resulting in high levels of inflation and severe power, water, and fuel shortages.

In preparation for observing the AntiSanctions Day against Zimbabwe on October 25, 2023 in Harare, the students expressed solidarity with Zimbabwe and called for the lifting of two-decade sanctions.

Considering the protracted sanctions that have adversely impacted "Our Generation of Zimbabweans," the country's thriving economy, and indeed the entire Southern Africa nation over the past 20 years, he said the call has become imperative; sanctions are slowing down Zimbabwe's progress, hindering economic recovery and penalizing the most vulnerable.

Perpetuating the already devastating sanction would be like trying to kill a snake in a precious earthen pot and inadvertently breaking it.

After carefully considering the 4-Key Reform Pillars for Zimbabwe's implementation program, including governance and land tenure reforms, compensation for former farm owners, and the resolution of bilateral investment protection agreements, we are confident in the dedication of President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa's leadership towards creating a sanction-free Zimbabwe.
