Sweden Gives Iraq $1.9 Million US Dollars for Stabilization Program

 


The Swedish Government has given UNDP an extra 20 million SEK (around 1.9 million US dollars) to the Funding Facility for Stabilization program. A signing ceremony was conducted between Her Excellency Ms. Jessica Svärdström, the Ambassador of Sweden to Iraq, and UNDP Resident Representative in Iraq Auke Lootsma in order to formalize this generous donation.

Since 2015, the Swedish Government has provided 434 million SEK (about $42 million USD) to UNDP's initiatives in Iraq to reconstruct and reintegrate communities affected by ISIL. UNDP Iraq Resident Representative Auke Lootsma commented: "We are grateful for the support."

With 3% of Sweden’s population originating from Iraq, means that there are strong ties between both countries. Her Excellency Ms. Jessica Svärdström, Swedish Ambassador to Iraq, confirms that Sweden will continue to support the stability and security of Iraq through bilateral development cooperation. As of April 2023, UNDP's Funding Facility for Stabilization has completed 3,500 projects in five Iraqi governorates; these projects include restoring schools, hospitals, water systems, electricity networks, as well as providing temporary work opportunities for 8.3 million Iraqis and aiding the return of 4.9 million displaced by ISIL conflict
