Why Did Saddam Invade Kuwait? What is Slant Drilling?

On Aug. 2, 1990, Iraq invaded and occupied Kuwait within two days.  That’s right, the invasion took two days.  Saddam blamed Kuwait for slant drilling from Iraqi oil fields.  He also claimed the Gulf state was actually an ancient province of Iraq, which is more than likely true.

However, the reality is Saddam owed the Kuwaitis $14 billion from Iraq’s nearly 10-year war with Iran, and Kuwaiti oil drilling was driving down the price of oil.

What is Slant Drilling?

"Slant drilling, also known as directional drilling, is the practice of drilling non-vertical wells. It is often used in oil and gas production to exact oil or natural gas that cannot be accessed by drilling vertically."

Saddam believed Kuwait was slant drilling near or in the gulf, which recent research shows are full of oil.
