Iraq's government spokesman, Bassem al-Awadi said the proposal to close the US Embassy could destroy the country.
Awadi told al-Ahed channel, affiliated with Asaib Ahl al-Haq, that Iraq has international obligations, and any decision affecting diplomatic missions would affect Iraq's foreign relations.
Following the burning of the Quran in Sweden, the Swedish government closed the Swedish Embassy in Iraq.
According to him, such a proposal would not only affect the framework agreement (signed between Washington and Baghdad), but would also destroy Iraq.
In his statements to al-Ahed, Al-Awadi indicates that Qais al-Khazali-led Asaib Ahl al-Haq disagrees with demands to close the US Embassy in Iraq.
In issuing this government statement through this channel, it is evident that it is in conflict with Moqtada al-Sadr, Head of the Sadrist movement, and other Shiite armed factions that have attacked American interests and bases in Iraq and Syria in response to Washington's support of Israel over the past two weeks.
In response to Washington's unfettered support for Israel, Sadr called on the Iraqi government and lawmakers to close the US embassy in Baghdad.
Al-Sadr may have intended to embarrass the Coordination Framework and the Islamic Resistance groups who control the government by disclosing their alleged opposition to the American presence.
According to observers in Baghdad, Shiite factions are divided, and their stance is against attacking American interests. The pragmatic forces in the Coordination Framework prefer calm and avoid a new war for Iraq, including Asaib Ahl al-Haq.
